A Conversation with Orchard Alumnus Martijn Bos

Where did we meet our former colleague? Orchard Finance is celebrating its 20-year anniversary, which is making us reflect on the people who have been with us over the years, and how they’re doing today. This time, we’re in conversation with our former colleague Martijn.
Name: Martijn Bos
Represented Orchard Finance from 2014 to 2020 as a (Senior) Consultant
Current position: Group Treasurer at Hoogwegt Group

Could you tell us about your background and start at Orchard Finance?
Before starting at Orchard Finance I did a pre-master and master in commercial sciences at the Catholic University in Leuven. After finishing my studies I decided to return to the Netherlands. I wasn’t certain what I wanted to do at the time, but consultancy had always appealed to me.
Through LinkedIn I came across a job posting form Orchard. I quickly responded, and after an interview I started as an intern. After a month of working as an intern I became an analyst and quickly started my first on-site assignment with a client. My job at Orchard was my first serious job, so that was a great match for my situation at the time, when I was still looking around for what I wanted. As a consultant you’re afforded the opportunity to explore different types of companies and work on a variety of different projects. This enables you to learn much in a short period of time.
What do you do in your current position?
I started at Hoogwegt Group as Treasurer Controller, but after a year-and-a-half, moved up to Group Treasurer. My current role is highly diverse and touches operational, as well as strategic aspects of the firm.
I’m always working on a number of long-term projects, usually ones where financing and treasury intersect, so the knowledge and experience I gained at Orchard can be put to good use. In addition to the long-term projects, my days are filled with recurring and ad-hoc business. I maintain contact with our banks, and occupy a central role in financing and risk management.
How do you reflect on your time at Orchard?
I started at Orchard in the Debt Advisory practice, but I slowly became interested in the treasury side of the business. In practicing both aspects of Orchard I was able to construct a well-rounded profile. I then started to take a more leading role in treasury assignments. This being an everyday possibility, given the right assignments are available, is one of the advantages of a smaller firm. Keep in mind that showing initiative in these situations is always crucial.
What initially got me interested in Orchard was the ability to adopt a wide range of assignments and responsibilities. My interview was very down-to-earth, and I could appreciate the clear communication. I always found Orchard’s company culture to be very comfortable, and I am still in touch with a few people at the firm.
Do you have any tips for starters in the field of Finance & Treasury?
Focus on doing things. I believe that a consultancy agency like Orchard enables you to do this, which is excellent when you are not certain where you want to end up in the future. It offers you the ability to find some direction, whether this is within Orchard or, eventually, somewhere else.
